This year marks the third community-responsive activation for Karla Diaz, continuing a unity project she originally launched in 2024. Integrating a community run, public programming, and painting, the initiative creates safe spaces for healing, art, and collective storytelling. Following a year-long residency, research, and a series of community-led workshops, the project will culminate in three core components: a community run/walk event, two public portrait banners inspired by Diaz’s interactions and workshops, and an exhibition of her watercolor works on paper.

The banners, entitled We are a community and Misses Borrego are on view on the east side of The Mall through April 5, 2026.

This project is developed in close collaboration with the Latino organization OLAX and Esmeralda Lopez, with special thanks to the Borrego Springs Community Resource Center and The Mall.

“Peace is not an ideal, but a practical and achievable reality—when we take intentional action at both the personal and community level.”

A community celebration dedicated to art and unity. The day begins with a collective run/walk in which the gathered audience becomes one living, breathing, moving organism circulating in heart of Borrego Springs. The morning culminates in a public event at the Community Resource Center featuring a food, interactive arts programs, entertainment, and information on community resources. The event aims to create an inclusive community for all people, highlighting unity, art and exchange of diverse stories through art.
